Customer Reviews about Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic: Clifford Kirk D MD

  • Dr. Clifford is a very patient and competent surgeon. He is straight forward and he just knows his business. I would recommend him to anyone with ANY type of spine issue. He will do his best to correct the problem. I saw him 3 years ago and he did a major fusion on my lower spine. I did everything he asked me to do and what I was not to do for 6 months. He worked a miracle for me. Now 3 years later I have seen him because as almost always happens after a fusion there is stenosis in the next vertebrae. After several options I said, I think you should just go ahead and fix it. He will in a week. So many folks just cringe when you say you are having back surgery, I say, do not wait, go see this man. He is a credit to his profession, and I know he is a Christian.

Skip Dr. Clifford and find another doctor. After an MRI, Xrays, several visits with his PAs and finally an in-person exam, Dr. Clifford said it could be "anything" in my back that was causing my pain. He said he could do a 2-level fusion but he "might make things worse," and that either way I was going to have back pain for the rest of my life. Dr. Clifford obviously lacked the ability or expertise to make a definitive diagnosis, so I sought a second opinion from Dr. Donald S. Corenman at the Steadman Clinic in Vail. I sent Dr. Corenman my records and waited a couple of months for an appointment, but it was well worth the wait. Dr. Corenman was a chiropractor before he was a spine surgeon. He knows spines inside and out, and has a far greater understanding of spinal pathology than Dr. Clifford. After going over my records and spending five minutes with me in the exam room, Dr. Corenman knew exactly what the source of my pain was. He ordered two more tests that confirmed his diagnosis, and I scheduled surgery at Vail Valley Medical Center for a one-level TLIF (fusion). I spent 48 hours in the hospital and now 5 months post-surgery I am pain free and back to my normal activity level. Dr. Corenman rescued me from a world of pain, where Dr. Clifford literally told me I'd have to live in pain for the rest of my life. Rocky Mountain Orthopedic Associates might be fine for easily-diagnosed problems like a broken arm or leg, but not for spinal problems. If you're having back pain, skip Dr. Clifford and RMOA and go right to the Steadman Clinic. It's a long way to Vail, but the level of care and the outcome is more than worth it. Dr. Clifford far from a dogged diagnostician, and RMOA felt like a factory. My impression was that if the docs there can't figure out what's wrong with you or if what you have is the least bit complicated, they'd rather not deal with you. Instead, they put their time and effort into lowering your expectations for treatment and recovery. At the Steadman Clinic, the difference was like night and day. The docs up there have a much higher skill level and far more experience and dedication to diagnosing your problem and making sure you get the treatment that is exactly right for you.
